LAWRENCE CHARTER SCHOOL HYBRID CLASSROOMS FIND MIDDLE GROUND
How do you accommodate students who learn better in-person and those who prefer on-line? How do you also address the needs of teachers with health concerns, and parents who need to go to work?
Offer them options.
Those options are the current definition of hybrid education – a mix of in-person and remote instruction, with real-time and asynchronous learning and participation.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, charter schools like Lawrence Family Development, have been using streaming video systems to maximize the number of students who can safely attend school in person, and minimize learning loss. With hybrid classrooms they can accommodate safe in-person learning, while serving those who learn remotely and are self-directed.
HYBRID CLASSROOM OPTIONS TO MAXIMIZE LEARNING
The Lawrence Family Development Charter School first started using DiscoverVideo’s DEVOS platform in the fall of 2020. It immediately gave them the flexibility needed for modern teaching modalities.
The original intent of the streaming system was to provide a private and secure live stream for remote teaching within the school campus.
Their current solution to social distancing divides classes and sends live streams to overflow classrooms in other buildings, and/or to students at home. This hybrid model was easily accomplished with a DEVOS server, and Streamsie software encoder licenses for every teacher.
Teachers instruct as before while the class streams through a webcam in real-time, and is recorded for on-demand playback. In addition, teachers create and assign video lessons with embedded questions.
Adoption of the the DEVOS system for live and on-demand resources has varied, depending on the teacher. However, professional development has included training sessions and the video platform is being added to more curriculums. Those that have taken full advantage have created channels and sub channels, organized by grade, and subject.

STREAMING TO CONTINUE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
The Lawrence Family Development Charter School is a highly sought-after public education system, with a limited number of slots available per grade. To make admission equitable, they admit students through an application and lottery system. As per Massachusetts’ law, the lottery selection process needs to be done as a public event.
However, due to event capacity and social distancing restrictions, in March, 2021, the event had to be virtual. For the first time in their history, the lottery was live streamed through DEVOS. Giving access was a simple as sharing a link to the live broadcast on their website and social media channels. The whole community was able to watch over the Internet.
This is the first of many public events Lawrence now plans to broadcast. Graduation, fundraisers, board meetings, and more are on their list of events that will easily be shared with the school and wider community.
Our lottery event was very easy to set up and share with the outside community. We are looking forward to broadcasting more live events, like graduation."
