Personal Videoconference System
|
If you have used free "webcam" videoconference systems for your
PC, or expensive "Group Room Systems" from Polycom, Tandberg, Sony,
and others, then you know the value of a videoconference.
Trouble is, the free stuff is unreliable and has poor
audio/video quality, and the room systems cost way too much
and are not portable.
Finally, a VTC ("Video Tele Conference") system that you can
afford (US$859.95), has quality that
rivals room systems, and it fits in the palm of your hand! The
amazing inPerson System comes from Creative Labs, the same guys that
brought you the "Soundblaster" card for your PC. Frankly, this
device is amazing. Look at the features:
Built-in camera.
Built-in echo cancellation.
Built-in viewing screen (supports external monitor too).
SIP, H.323 protocols, H.264 (MPEG-4 part 10) video compression
Interoperates with other inPerson units, AND with legacy H.323
VTC's AND with desktop webcams.
Built-in contact list
Built-in WIRELESS 802.11 -- operate from any WiFi hotspot (wired
Ethernet support too)
First year SIP registration service included (after
that, it's US$10/month ($120/year)

"I've used a PC for video. It's good when it
works. But with firewall updates and new downloads, suddenly
my PC is messed up and it doesn't work without a reboot. I needed something
simple and reliable that executives can't break and can take with
them when they travel."
"We used to have one video conference system in one classroom.
Now we can put a system in every classroom because this costs 1/10th
of the alternative and the quality is just as good."

How It Works
The system comes with
SIP service. The service simply allows you to register your unit
(it happens automatically) with the SIP server so that others can
find you to place a call even from behind a firewall. Your unit contacts the server to get
the network path to the other party and then the call proceeds
directly between units. Think of the SIP service as a "match
maker". Your video never goes to the server,
so there no special security risk and certainly no additional cost.
Because the server knows how to reach you, anyone with a webcam can
call you by entering your ID number (for example, you can call us
right now from
here).
Of course, you can call anyone with an older
H.323
room system
by simply entering their address in your contact list, in which case
you don't use the SIP service at all.
For multi-party calls, you can buy minutes on the server. In
this case, the server needs to combine multiple parties so your
video does go there. But for the most part, you will placing
simple point-to-point calls for free.
Applications
This level of performance, reliability, simplicity, physical size,
and price makes VTC applications possible where they just didn't
make sense before.
Health Care -- Any medical professional can consult with another
professional at the touch of a button. But now medical staff
can reach the home-bound, the elderly, and others that were
virtually impossible to visit on a timely basis.
Education -- Every public school, every college
and University can outfit not just one room, but every classroom
with videoconferences. With the portable simplicity, a school can
easily "loan one out" to a remote student who can now fully
participate in a classroom session.
Legal -- Lawyers can consult with clients, and/or with
staff. Even while traveling away from the home office.
Television Broadcasters -- The public is used to "broadband" reports
from distant locations. Now you can conduct and air out two-way live interviews without the headache
of a PC or the cost of expensive broadcast equipment. Perfect for
PEG broadcasters too!
Sales -- Reach your sales team for regular updates. Contact your
key customers. Let customers call you using their webcam.
Corporate -- Conduct videoconferences with executives, no matter
where they are. The inPerson device is less costly than many cell
phone plans, and there is no per-call charge!
Government -- With an inPerson device on every elected
official's desk, they can instantly communicate with other
departments, with the media and with the citizens they represent.
Hospitality
-- Hotels outfit
conference rooms to
enable customers to
reach their home
offices and
customers.
Emergency Responders -- Using conventional cellular technology, you can
conduct a videoconference from virtually anywhere. Show the
fire chief or the dispatcher the on-the-ground conditions, let the hospital medical staff
see and communicate with the patient.
